The end of Summer vacation is creeping up on us and the kids will soon be heading off back to school. Here are a few tips to make this change cost effective and less of a headache.
The best strategy for back-to-school shopping? Get organized, stock up on the basics, and scour the net and newspaper for sales and promotions.
Make a list and involve the kids! Use the supply list your school furnishes as a guideline but remember one list doesn't fit everyone....Separate the wants from the needs.
Take inventory from everything left over from previous purchases. If you still have 15 reams of college ruled paper you bought on sale last year than chances are this is an expense you can bypass this year.
Buy basics in bulk - You can usually get the pencils, pens, erasers, etc at a cheaper rate when these items are purchased in bulk.
Watch for promotions/giveaways - Many times throughout the summer and just before school starts, street fairs, doctors offices, etc will give out free items such as pencils, pens and other small items you can use.
Recycle - Turn last years backpack, notebook etc into something "new" by simply changing it instead of bearing the expense of all new. Your child can add stickers to the notebook, draw a picture on it, sew patches onto the backpack, add keychains or other items you may have around the house or in the toybox to give last years school supplies a new look and feel.
Going back to school is inevitable but it can be done cheaply with a little planning and creativity.
