No matter what your age, where you live, or what your talent may be, there is always some way you can give back to make your community stronger and an enjoyable place to live!
1. Education - Call your local school to see if there is someone that needs tutoring and volunteer your time to help. Pick your strong subject. this is a very rewarding experience
2. Find a non-profit such as American Humane Association or the American Red Cross and either donate your time or make a financial donation. If you find the right organization to suit your skills and abilities this is such a heart-felt contribution and a great way to help others!
3. With the holidays coming up, make a food basket for a needy family. You can contact one of your local food banks and/or the Dept. Of Social Services in your area and on most occasions, they will provide you with the name and address of a needy family in your area. the basket doesn't have to be extravagant - Whatever you feel comfortable giving!
4. Host a food drive - Gather your family, friends and any neighbors that would like to help and collect cans of food, non-perishables that in turn can be donated to a local food bank or shelter. At holiday time you can also take your collected items to your nearest police/sheriff station and/or fire station as these entities distribute food and toys to needy families around Thanksgiving/Christmas Time.
5. Send a phone card or care package to a soldier.
6. Volunteer to visit people at a Convalescent home and/or hospital. Some of these people don't have family or friends that can visit them and your time and caring would be more than welcome!
7. Click for a good cause - Every time you do a search at GoodSearch.com, a penny is donated to your favorite cause—the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, for instance, or your local temple or church. Other search engines that let you click and give: SearchKindly.org and SearchAndGive.com. If instant messaging is your thing, Microsoft’s “i’m Initiative” donates to your choice of 10 popular charities each time you chat online.
8. Donate your old cell phone - The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence collects and distributes working cell phones to victims of domestic violence. And Phones for Life will turn your PDA or cell phone into a 911-capable lifeline for seniors and domestic violence victims.
9. Help clean up your community - Gather up the family and a few friends armed with trash bags and gloves and pick a park, beach, or other place you think needs a bit of cleaning and pick up all the trash you see.
10. Create a community garden or give your closet a "spring cleaning" and donate old clothes to a charity.
